Lead Kit for Modular Units

The VON accessory lead kit contains items that are often needed in the course of high voltage D.C. testing with a modular Model C, D, E, F, and G series test set. Most of the items in the kit are locally obtainable. The storage case has enough room for the protective output resistor provided with modular high voltage D.C. test sets. The kit consists of the following items:

1 Storage case 10.5" X 16.5" X 22.5" (26.7cm X 41.9cm X 57.2cm)

2 Rolls 100' (30.5m) long of #12 red solid 600v insulated wire suitable as unshielded test lead to 100kv with proper clearance.

1 Test lead 50' (15.3m) long of RG-8U solid polyethylene insulated coaxial cable with ends prepared by removing PVC cover and peeling the braided shield back 40" (102cm) on one end and 25" (64cm) on the other end.

Notes:
RG-8U polyethylene cable can be purchased at most radio supply shops. Test leads up to 200 feet (61m) long have been used successfully without affecting test results. With proper clearance to ground at the ends, all sharp metallic points covered to eliminate corona and the shield grounded, one should not be able to read any leakage on this lead at voltages to 120kv. For excellent unshielded lead to 500kv, remove the PVC jacket and the braided copper shield to obtain a flexible conductor with a thick polyethylene covering.

12 Jumpers 30" (76cm) long for interconnections, such as grounding nearby floating metallic objects.

2 Sheets of polyethylene 32' (10m) X 4' (1.2m) for covering up operating levers and other sharp objects on insulated aerial devices or cable terminations to eliminate corona currents from the test results.

1 Roll of safety tape 150 feet (46m) long for isolating the high voltage cabinet if it cannot be put in an inaccessible place during a test.

1 Roll of #12 nylon twine used for tying off leads from grounded structures. When dry and clean, it is corona free.

3 Sample test sheets

2 Springs for testing insulating booms foot by foot.

1 Ground lead 15 feet (4.6m) long with 1/4" ring terminal one end and alligator clip on the other end.
